20 Outsiders

A very smart screenwriting professor once told us to list all of our favorite viewing, figure out what they have in common, and write that.

Outsiders are a big theme in my favorites, along with found family. What lies behind that, aside from the obvious? I dig into that here, mostly discussing cult tv shows I love and own on DVD, but also the book The Outsiders, which might be where we as a culture started articulating these things. Maybe? Could be earlier, who knows.

I’m fascinated by the way that everyone, regardless of their situation, feels like an outsider in some way.

How can we use this in our writing? Lots of ways, it turns out.
